House of Welcome English classes offer conversational & structured learning support to people seeking asylum and refugees in a social and friendly environment.
Language and a lack of English skills can be one of the biggest barriers for people seeking asylum when they come to Australia. With enhanced English skills people are enabled to participate more fully in the community, social isolation is reduced, and employment and study opportunities become significantly more accessible. English language skills are vital for people seeking asylum to be able to move forward in their new lives and feel a part of the Australian community.
Classes are open to both intermediate and beginner levels and there is no assessment process for new students. For both morning and afternoon classes there is a main teacher and a support teacher for those with the most basic English.
Weekly group classes occur twice every Monday, 11 – 1pm and 1.30 – 3pm. Students can attend both morning and afternoon classes and a simple lunch and snacks are provided throughout the day.
English classes are held at the House of Welcome: 197 The Trongate, Granville 2142
